Color and Crash Risk – What Are the Most Dangerous Colors for Cars?
According to the Vehicle Colour Study by Monash University Research Centre, black was the most dangerous color when studying the association between color and crash risk. Black vehicles had a 12% higher crash risk than the safest car color, white.
Other vehicles that had higher crash risks compared to white vehicles include:
- Grey cars (11%)
- Silver vehicles (10%)
- Blue vehicles (7%)
- Red cars (7%)
A reason for the higher crash risk for black vehicles is that they can be more difficult to see. A black car is more likely to blend into the background of the road, especially at night. Silver cars and grey cars can also be difficult to see, especially in poor weather conditions.
Light blue cars might blend in with the daytime sky. Dark blue cars blend into the dart at night, much like black vehicles. Red vehicles are often associated with high risks of car accidents, but the color is not as difficult to see as black, blue, silver, and grey.
Color and Crash Risk – What Are the Safest Colors for Cars?
White ranked as the safest car color. They stand out in traffic and against the vehicle’s surroundings.
Likewise, beige and yellow cars have low crash risks because they stand out against the background. Other “safe” car colors include orange cars and gold cars.
Being a “safe” color means that the car colors had a lower crash risk than the “dangerous” car colors listed above.
Green cars are in the middle. A green vehicle does not appear to increase or decrease the risk of being involved in a car crash. The risk can depend on the landscape and environment.
Common Causes of Car Accidents in Los Angeles
The most common cause of car crashes is driver errors and negligence. According to car accident statistics, dangerous driving behaviors that can lead to a car wreck include:
- Speeding and reckless driving
- Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
- Following too closely (tailgating)
- Distracted driving, including texting while driving
- Failing to follow traffic laws
When a driver causes a car accident, the driver can be liable for economic and non-economic damages. However, you have the burden of proving negligence before you can recover money for an accident claim. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney can help you gather evidence to prove the at-fault driver is liable for your damages.
