Motorcycle Licensing Requirements in California
Home » Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Lawyer » Motorcycle Licensing Requirements in California
The majority of the motorcycling population in the United States resides in California. Statistics show that over 780,000 motorcycles are currently registered in California. With its stunning coastlines and roads stretching over hundreds of miles, it’s not surprising that the Golden State is a perfect place for avid motorcyclists.
Motorcycles require unique skills and different issues to consider when on the road, so the licensing requirements for operating a motorcycle are different from the typical automobile driver’s license. Before getting on the road, be sure you’re complying with all licensing requirements for operating a motorcycle in Los Angeles, California.

Motorcycle Licensing in California
The process of getting your motorcycle license from the California motorcycle licensing department involves submitting an application along with the standard government fee. In addition, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- If you’re under the age of 21, you must get a motorcycle learner’s permit 6 months before applying for the license
- Pass the following tests: a vision test, a written test, and a driving test (or the motorcycle safety program/training course approved by California Highway Patrol)
- Show proof of identification and residency in California
Acquire a Learner’s Permit
Before being granted a full license, candidates must apply to get a learner’s permit. This involves getting a certificate of completion from the California Motorcyclist Safety Program (approved by CHP) if you’re between 15 ½ and 21 years of age.
If you can’t present an ID or driver’s license, you must prove California residency with a US passport or birth certificate copy. You must pass the knowledge test with at least an 84% passing score.
If you fail, you can retry three times with a fee of $37. If you’re still under 21 when you get your learner’s permit, you will have to wait 6 months to apply for the full license.
Ensure you comply with all the restrictions that come with the learner’s permit, such as driving only during daylight hours or avoiding passengers. Don’t risk injury or death by flouting the laws. The restrictions are for your safety and others, especially if you’re an inexperienced motorcycle enthusiast.
Motorcycle License Application
Fill out the motorcycle license application and submit it with the standard fee to a California DMV near you.
When applying for a motorcycle license, you must provide an acceptable form of identification, such as your driver’s license or ID card. You can also show your US passport or proof of residency in California. You will have to pass a vision test and pay a $37 application fee that will be non-refundable.
Pass the Written and Driving Tests
Passing the written test is based on knowledge, so prepare yourself. If you fail three times in a row, you will have to submit the application and pay the non-refundable fee again. You need to get a score of over 84%.
For the driving portion, you can either provide a Certification of Completion of Motorcycle Training or simply take the driving test through the California DMV. You must schedule the test in advance through the DMV communication portal. Your motorcycle will have to pass the pre-test inspection.
A qualified inspector will test you for slow riding ability, a variety of path riding skills, and gear shifting knowledge. The cost of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program approved by CHP is $295 for applicants under 21 and $350 for those over 21.
