How Our Los Angeles Car Accident Lawyers Can Help After a Red and Yellow Light Crash
Many intersections in Los Angeles are controlled by traffic signals. When the light is green, everyone knows you’re supposed to go. When the light is red, most drivers know it means to stop.
However, there are differing opinions on what you should do when a light is yellow. Some drivers slow down, while others speed up. When drivers speed up to “beat” a red or yellow light, accidents are more likely to happen. And intersection accidents tend to be among the most catastrophic.
If you’re hurt in a red and yellow light crash in Los Angeles, M&Y Personal Injury Lawyers can help.
Our Los Angeles car accident attorneys have a track record of winning tough cases like yours. We know exactly what it will take to make your case a success – which is why you should make our law firm your first call after you get hurt.
As we handle your car crash case, we will:
- Investigate the crash to determine why it happened and who’s at fault
- Gather evidence to demonstrate that another driver failed to comply with California state law as they moved through the intersection
- Work with experts who specialize in intersection accidents as we build and value your claim
- Defend against any efforts to blame you for your accident and injuries
- Handle all conversations and negotiations with insurance companies and other parties

What Do Drivers Have to Do When Approaching Red or Yellow Lights in California?
If you’re driving in California, you have a responsibility to know the rules of the road. This includes knowing what different traffic signals and lights mean – and what you’re supposed to do as you approach them.
Here’s what California law has to say about approaching red and yellow lights:
Solid Red Light
Slow down and come to a complete stop. You can make a right-hand turn when a light is red as long as there aren’t any signs prohibiting it.
You must yield to other traffic, including bicyclists and pedestrians, before moving through the intersection to make a turn.
Flashing Red Light
Slow down and come to a complete stop. You can move through the intersection once you’ve determined it’s safe. If there’s other traffic, you must yield to others who arrived at the intersection first. If you and another vehicle both arrive at the red light at the same time, the motorist on the right has the right of way.
Steady Red Arrow
Slow down, come to a complete stop, and remain stopped until the light changes.
Solid Yellow Light
You must choose the safest option:
- Slow down and come to a complete stop, or
- Continue to move through the intersection.
You should not speed up and race through the intersection in an effort to “beat” a light that you could have safely stopped at. Only continue through the intersection if it would be unsafe to stop.
Flashing Yellow Light
Slow down as you approach and continue to move through the intersection with caution. Yield the right of way to other vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
Solid Yellow Arrow
Slow down and come to a complete stop if it’s safe to do so. Continue through the intersection and make your turn if it’s not safe to stop.
