Santa Cruz County bus catches fire with children inside after crash

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY (KSBW) – California Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday morning just outside of Watsonville.

A photo from the scene shows a school bus and a car crashing into each other. The school bus has visible burn marks on the front of it.

CHP said that around 7:28 a.m. a 28-year-old man from Freedom was driving a 2020 Kia Forte and going north on Green Valley Road at an unknown speed.

At the same time, a 37-year-old Watsonville woman was driving a school bus south on Green Valley Road.

CHP says for an unknown reason the Kia driver went into the southbound lane and crashed head-on with the bus.

Minor injuries were reported in the crash, per CHP. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries as did a 13-year-old student on the bus.

CHP says that 43 students were onboard the bus.
