19-year-old dies after chain-reaction crash last week in Corona

Multiple crashes on the 91 Freeway in the early hours of Thursday sent a Walnut man to the hospital and killed a 19-year-old Bakersfield man, officials said Tuesday.

The California Highway Patrol said an earlier crash around 12:45 a.m. left a Ford Focus and Honda Accord stopped between the furthest right express lanes and two furthest left standard-traffic lanes on the eastbound 91 Freeway. just east of Buena Vista Avenue in Corona. The Focus was facing west due to the earlier crash.

CHP Officer Juan Quintero said the Focus did not have functioning lights due to the crash and wasn’t visible to oncoming traffic. It was hit head-on by a Mini Cooper.

“This head-on collision caused Mason Parnell (in the Focus) to be ejected through the open driver’s side door onto the roadway,” officials said.

Parnell died of his injuries due to the car accident, and his passenger, a 20-year-old Walnut man, was sent to Riverside Community Hospital, according to a CHP crash report.

After crashing into the Focus, the Mini Cooper crashed into the Accord. The Mini Cooper was then rear-ended by a Toyota Corolla.

Information was not immediately available on the condition of the man who was sent to the hospital.

Officials said no arrests have been made, but the CHP was still investigating.
