Case Study: Single Father Struck by Negligent Driver – Six-Figure Settlement Secured

Jasbindar Singh’s life took a devastating turn when his vehicle was T-boned at an intersection. Mr. Singh was halfway through the intersection when the defendant ran a stop sign and struck his car on the passenger side. The impact was so severe that Mr. Singh was ejected from his vehicle and thrown into a nearby field. His car was completely totaled.

This accident was both a physical and emotional blow. Tragically, Mr. Singh had lost his wife shortly before the collision. The vehicle carried immense sentimental value—it was the last major purchase he had made with his late wife. The emotional trauma of losing both his wife and his car in such close succession caused Mr. Singh to suffer severe mental injuries, including extreme grief and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At the time of the accident, Mr. Singh was raising two young children as a single father while also working full-time as a special education teacher. Balancing his recovery with parenting and professional responsibilities created overwhelming stress and anxiety.

Physically, Mr. Singh suffered significant injuries to his head, neck, chest, ribs, and left shoulder. He endured months of physical therapy and was diagnosed with multiple conditions, including:

  • Post-traumatic headaches
  • Cervical and thoracic sprain/strain
  • Rib strain
  • Thoracic kyphosis
  • CTL segmental dysfunction
  • PTSD

Further neurodiagnostic testing revealed white matter fiber damage in several areas of his brain, including the left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, both fornices, both internal capsules, and the left corona radiata.

Two and a half years later, Mr. Singh has made progress but continues to suffer from daily neck pain, headaches, and lower back pain. These ongoing symptoms have impacted both his ability to teach and his capacity to care for his children—two roles that require substantial physical activity.

Overcoming Legal Challenges

The legal battle was not easy. The defendant denied all wrongdoing, blaming Mr. Singh entirely for the collision. Additionally, the defendant’s insurance company significantly undervalued Mr. Singh’s claim compared to our firm’s assessment.

Undeterred, M&Y conducted a thorough investigation and located a key third-party witness who confirmed the truth: the defendant lost control of his vehicle and struck Mr. Singh, causing the crash.

Armed with this testimony, our firm decisively proved the defendant’s negligence.

Knowing that Mr. Singh’s story was powerful and emotionally compelling, we focused on preparing him thoroughly for his deposition. Our strategy was clear: if Mr. Singh performed well, the defense would want to avoid the risk of putting him in front of a jury.

The Outcome

Our strategy worked. Mr. Singh’s deposition was moving, honest, and highly persuasive. Soon after, the defense agreed to settle the case for a confidential six-figure amount.

While the litigation process took over two years—filled with medical treatments, discovery, and strategic depositions—our firm’s dedication led to a resolution that brought Mr. Singh closure and justice.

Today, Mr. Singh is grateful for the outcome and relieved to put this chapter behind him.
